I have "OpenSFX" as my sound. Because i was having various issues with certain things, I figured I'd delete all of my "content_download" directory and re-load. The problem is that now when I start OpenTTD the game immediately brings up an error which then crashes out of OpenTTD.
I put it to you that the game should gracefully degrade to no-sound and give a nice red warning message as it does for missing NewGRF files.
Same thing happens with OpenMSX when I've replaced OpenSFX. Neither is actually critical to playing the game so the game should still load.
Graphics may be more tricky, but loading the start screen page (sans background obviously) and allowing use of the content download function would probably be a good solution.
Upon further investigation, it seems this is what a clean install of OpenTTD does (even including the graphics part). So it should be a relatively simple matter to call the same routines for missing OpenGFX,MSX and SFX in these circumstances too.
