I just tried to build an electric engine and then add a diesel engine behind it. Then it left the electrified rails and sure enough the power dropped to the diesel engine only, but then it happened
Once in a while the electric engine displayed sparks even when there was no catenary. I tried to switch the engine and include steam in the train as well and so on. It appears that it's pretty static that electric engines don't check for catenary when displaying sparks
