Many aviation enthusiasts and I likewise find that OpenTTD's airport layout and its systems are unrealistic. I have personally tried to create "airports" using the OpenGFX Airport Objects NewGRF and all that lacks are planes and planes. If planes could takeoff, taxi and land at the customized airports, it would be really, really awesome! It can be possible that the planes are routed within the airport using something like a guidance system (where the user can click out the taxi route for the plane).

I know it may sound complicated and may even be rejected, but if this is accepted, OpenTTD will see a great change! :D

Also to note, my aviation enthusiast friend was a bit shocked to see that the planes landed on the threshold. I know it's just a game but it would be great if it could be more realistic. Another very unrealistic thing is of course, that jumbo jets (such as a Boeing 747-400) can takeoff from a short runway. Even the Intercontinental airports have short runways, let alone the smaller airports.

I have attached screenshots of the custom layout airports (namely Snoopyland Airport - SLA/SSLA and Addinbourghe Airport ADD/SADD).

I hope the team would take this suggestion into serious consideration! :)

Note: Snoopyland is a fictitious (obviously LOL) thing so don't take it too seriously xD

Attached files and details:

Oh and I also used OpenGFX Airport Object's Hangars as the ALS (Approach Lighting System). SLA/SSLA has the newer one (when I realized that I can use 3 rows for a good old ALS) while ADD/SADD, as you can see, only has one row of red ALS haha

Keep in mind that OpenTTD is a game. Scale of pretty much everything in the game is off if you start comparing to real life.

There has been attempts in the past to do modular airports as well as allowing NewGRFs to define the airport state machine. However, these final results has not ended up in the main game. Airports still has seen some improvements over years. For example NewGRFs can define rotations of airports. See OpenGFX+ Airports, they can provide new airports too, but has to use one of the predefined state machines (aircraft movement patterns).

You can find some information here, should you be interested to pick up the work:
