When I click on the Windows shortcut to start TTD the entire screen turns black, for more than 10 min.
No keyboard commands work like: Alt+F4 (kills current program) or not even Ctrl+Alt+Delete works!
I have to kill the power to the computer and restart.

I had modified some settings before starting a new game yesterday, but I played it fine for several hours then, but when I tried to start the game today the black screen happened, and now I can't see what settings I have changed.
One setting I remember changing was windowed to full screen.

I also don't know where you are storing the settings, if I knew I would include that file.

OS: Win 7, 64 bit

Reported version: 1.5.0-beta1
Operating system: Windows

I will install another version of TTD now, that actually works.

Settings are stored in openttd.cfg; you can simply delete that file in order to restore settings to default. Look in C:\Users<username>\Documents\OpenTTD and also readme chapter 4 which came with your OpenTTD install (also online, e.g. https://svn.openttd.org/trunk/readme.txt)

Also make sure you don't use any desktop background changer; they are known to cause troubles.

I have a .RAR file of the entire installation map, if you want it, however I can't include it here because of the 8Mb limit, the file is 19.6 Mb.

Believe me, we know what files you have, we created the installer :)

If there was something wrong in the program itself, it is likely that many users would be affected, which we would notice by a flood of bug reports and forum posts about it.
That does not seem to be the case so far.

The conclusion therefore is that the most probable cause of the problem is something specific at your system, or something specific that you do, outside OpenTTD.

Since it's likely to be caused outside OpenTTD, sending back our files doesn't help.
Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find a cause. "Something at your system" is a lot of things. You may want to check for problems with you video card or with your video driver, in combination with full screen. Maybe other users of your type of computer have similar problems, and they solved it.

Another strategy is to just avoid the problem. If playing in windowed mode works, simply don't play in full screen. I know it's not a very satisfactory work around, but at least you can play the game then without having to hard-reset the computer.

I do hope you find a solution that works for you.

What I find strange with this bug is that it worked fine the first time, and "exploded" the second time, I didn't restart my computer after the install only after the first playing I restarted, if that could have something to do with it.

About the video card, I don't have one, only whats built in to the motherboard.

If you are interested you can see everything about my entire computer here:

Personally I think the easiest solution is to change the installed version from: 1.5.0-beta1 to: 1.4.4 and see what will happen.

It's not so strange imho. The first time you started in windowed mode, and toggled to fullscreen later. Apparently, that works fine.
Upon exit of OpenTTD the first time, your configuration file openttd.cfg is saved with all settings (planetmaker already pointed out how to find that file).
Since you exited from full screen, "use full screen mode" was written as configuration setting.

The second time you started the program, the configuration file you wrote at the end of the first time was read, and the settings are applied. In other words, the second time, OpenTTD was started in fullscreen mode instead of in windowed mode. Something apparently failed in that situation.

You can test this by deleting your openttd.cfg file, and starting OpenTTD. Then it should work like the first time you started the program. Change a few settings, but stay in windowed mode, and exit.
Then start OpenTTD again (without deleting openttd.cfg). It should again come up in windowed mode, with the settings that you changed preserved.

If that works, you know that you can play OpenTTD in windowed mode.

You can install different versions in different directories just fine, no need to delete one you already have. Note that installing a version doesn't kill your openttd.cfg and save games. If you want to start afresh, also delete the openttd.cfg file.

Never install a version on top of another version. The other game data, like language files, gets messed up.
