Normally Ubuntu should install timidity when installing OpenTTD.

Can you play the music files with timidity (with .mid extension)? They are probably in /usr/share/games/openttd/gm/openmsx-0.3.1 (if installed by Ubuntu) or in ~/.openttd/content_download/baseset/ (if downloaded)
