Thus, while you could add length information, it has no meaning until you place it in a real train. Only at that point you know the real length, which may be different depending on where in the train you add the piece, and different from what you get when you use it is as a separate piece.

(I know that changing length of a wagon when placing it sounds weird, but in this way you can have a single piece represent many different wagons (or engines), where the NewGRF takes care of selecting the right variant when it is used at a certain position.)
