When building horizontal or vertical tracks, two lines usually occupy the same square every second square. Signals can be placed independently, e.g. to use one track for going up, one for going down. However, changing the signal to a pre- or exit-signal affects the whole square klicked, making it impossible to have a pre-signal next to a normal signal (or any other combination) in one square.
