If you right click on the drop down list for the "No. of industries" field on the "New Game" dialog, random help text is shown. After some clicks (can be more than 30) the game crashes. I have tested with beta 2 on Windows 7 (with grf's) and Ubuntu 9.10 (without grf's, clean install).
According the to crash.txt, it can be due to an old language file, but this is the first time OpenTTD was installed on both installations.
