it is possible to rename a town to the same name as an existing town as long as the exiting nown has a name generated automatically. It's not possible to rename a town to a name which was already changed by the user.
Previously you could get different station names because one couldn't rename them on half of the clients. As a result of that ALL custom strings are compared only against custom strings. Automatically generated strings aren't compared to any strings.
This is just one of the things that can get a custom name. It behaves exactly like ALL other automatically names that can get changed by the users. Changing this instance means we would need to change the others which causes the problems I've described before.
There is NO way to solve both problems so the lesser of the problems would be the one that stays, which is this one.
