I noticed that if you have lots of trains, the memory usage will increase constantly, for about 400KiB in 5 minutes with ~500 trains, when doing absolutely nothing in the game. In case you don't have such a savegame I attached one that I created with a nightly build (r15599) that has around 550 trains.
When the memory usage of ottd reaches around 150MiB, the game starts to get jerky... If you simply save the game at this point and then restart ottd and load the game, you can continue playing until it reaches this mem usage again after some hours.
I am running WinXP SP3, if any other information is needed just ask.

What happens if you minimize the window and then open it again?

Can you confirm that the memory usage drops when you do this and then starts building up again?

It can as well be your sprite cache. What is your sprite_cache_size in openttd.cfg? Maybe your whole openttd.cfg would be useful.
How much RAM does your system have that it starts swapping after allocating 150MiB?

Here's my config. Its been in my ottd folder for quite some years now I admit. Maybe I should have created a new one for this :-/
It seems that the sprite cache is entirely disabled according to it.

The game does not start swapping at 150MiB, it will continue growing, but it just gets more and more jerky, so fast mouse movements won't really work any more. My system has 2GiB.

What is the first revision/version where you started noticing this behaviour?
What does the 5 minutes mean? 5 minutes at fast forward or 5 minutes without fast forward? If it's the former, how many in-game months/years is that?
