You may have seen, in some screenshots of TTPatch and OpenTTD that some people have attempted to recreate motorways. While its okay visually, it isn't very practical, as vehicles still drive as they would on a normal road.

That is why I think there should be motorways. This would most likely be a 2 square wide road, where on each side the traffic drives in the same direction, then this would enable the user to create a road network both visually pleasing and practical.

Reported version: trunk
Operating system: All

I believe this has been implentend with one-way roads (hold down ctrl while dragging the road)

Can I just add that there are a few practical limitations with creating motorways with one way roads: the AI builds depots off them and is unable to connect the depot because you cannot have one way junctions, thus forcing the AI to go bankrupt (the best way out of this IMO is to allow one way junctions, it would make dragging so much easier). The other problem is that vehicles, when planning routes, can't tell the difference between a motorway and a normal road so they take the shortest route.

Having said that, I don't think either of these issues should be a priority to fix.

I think the only way to make motorways worthwhile is to give vehicles on the motorway some kind of speed bonus. I don't know if a two tile wide "Motorway Tool" would be particularly smart (it forces the two lanes of the motorway to be side by side) but a tool which specifies particular roads as motorways would probably work.

andythenorth closed the ticket.

Reason for closing: Won't implement

Motorways (as described) won't happen. At best someone might patch vehicles to use both sides of one way road, which could then be used for the same result.
